The Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Center has donated new and gently used stuffed animals and blankets to various agencies in the county to be used by first responders to comfort children in emergency situations.

The “Beary Love” fundraising effort was part of a school-wide mission rolled out this month called Caring Kinder Mules through which students participate in service projects in order to give back to the community.

“As kids, sometimes they don’t get to take part [in charity], but even if they’re little, they can still find a way to give back,” explained Jessica Thurston, Kindergarten principal. “We give what we can.”

Emergency personnel receiving several boxes of items apiece—coordinated with help from vision screener Marsha McKuin—included: the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Fire Department and EMS; and the Poplar Bluff Police and Fire departments. Next month’s mission will be to write letters and make cards for residents of area nursing homes who may not get to see their families often, Thurston noted.

“The community has been so good in taking care of us, we just wanted to find a way to do our part,” the principal continued. “It goes along with our Capturing Kids’ Hearts [initiative], and really our mission as a district.”
